MGM Resorts Donates $50,000 to Springfield's South End Community Center

SPRINGFIELD (MA) Sept. 13, 2012 - MGM Resorts International's Chairman and CEO Jim Murren today presented a check for $50,000 to the South End Community Center (SECC). The donation will support SECC's After School Program.

Murren presented the check to SECC Board members prior to their regularly scheduled board meeting.

"We are honored to help sponsor such an important program for children in Springfield and are privileged to support the South End Community Center," said Murren. "MGM believes in being a good corporate neighbor in all communities where it resides, and this donation demonstrates our commitment to that philosophy, as well as our ongoing desire to make a positive impact on the lives of the residents of the City of Springfield."

The South End Community Center's After School Program is designed to host school children between 6 and 12 years of age. The program provides assistance in homework to all of the children on a daily basis. Academic activities are provided to children in order to help monitor and increase academic awareness as well as assist with MCAS preparation. The educational and recreational activities are put in place in order to help with the overall development of every child serviced in the program.

The After School Program began on August 27, 2012. MGM's donation will subsidize half of program's overall cost for the duration of the school year.

SECC Board Chairman Joseph Gallo said, "We are extremely grateful to MGM Resorts International for this donation and their support. On behalf of the children who will enjoy the benefits of this program, thank you for allowing them to have these opportunities to participate in programs that foster their development."

Last June, SECC's Howard Street location was reduced to rubble following the tornado that devastated parts of Western Massachusetts. Despite being displaced, the community center has continued satellite programs around the city.

Last month, MGM unveiled plans to develop an $800 million world-class dining, retail and entertainment district on about 10 acres of land in Downtown Springfield. Concurrently, MGM submitted a non-refundable $400,000 application fee to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), further demonstrating its commitment to a project in the City of Springfield.
